Port Jackson fig

El NAT Les seus Port Jackson fig

Nom científic
Ficus rubiginosa
Procedència
Australia

Also known as: Rusty fig, Little-leaf fig.

This species has a very characteristic feature of many Ficus, sending aerial roots from the branches and the trunk downwards in search of soil. Once they reach the soil, they strike root immediately and form thick columns, providing structural support, new nutrients and water . The tree can grow to a very large size.

The flowers of Ficus rubiginosa are pollinated exclusively by the fig wasp species Pleistodontes imperialis.

This arrangement is called mutualism, and each species has a specific wasp pollinator.

This species is not from native to the Mediterranean but to coastal and sub-coastal eastern Australia.
