Species of this genus are considered living fossils. They formed great wooded communities 200 million years ago during the Jurassic, when they were a main source of food for many of the herbivorous dinosaurs.

Both their common name, bread palm, and their scientific name, Endephalartos, which comes from the Greek words en (inside), kephali ( head) and artos (bread), refer to a bread-like food made from the centre of the stem.
