For over 100 years now, the Petrology Department has been working to serve society by managing and conserving the collection, carrying out research, as well as disseminating information and promoting the museum, both ethically and professionally.
With this aim in mind, the current team has carried out a meticulous inventory of the collection, has brought its conservation into line with today’s standards, and continues to study it. Furthermore, in the last few years the collection has been enriched with donations from the Peter Seroka and the R.D. Torró collections and the Jordi Valls sand collection. Meanwhile, in conjunction with the Mineralogy and Palaeontology departments, the databases have been expanded and updated, resulting in the creation of the PangeaDB® program.
The petrological and historical study of the collection, and the scientific research carried out within the department, have resulted in scientific publications, both articles in scientific journals and presentations at conferences (see the publications tab below).
A great improvement has also been made to the MCNB’s didactic rock collection, and an informative guide to rocks has been created: Guia de roques: coneixements bàsics i activitats didàctiques (“Rock guide: basic knowledge and didactic activities”).

Projects associated with the collection
With regard to the documentation, conservation and dissemination of the collection, the main projects carried out by the Petrology Department are:
- The documentation and characterization of specimens from different sub-collections.
- The creation of reference collections on: (1) Catalonia; (2) Polished rocks; (3) Sands.
- The PangeaDB® Project: the development of a new collection management tool created by the MCNB.
- The dissemination and publication of data associated with the collection’s specimens on online public portals.
- The digitization of the collection.
- The revision, improvementand expansion of the Guia de roques: coneixements bàsics i activitats didàctiques (“Rock guide: basic knowledge and didactic activities”).
- The dissemination and carrying out of activities related to petrology and the Earth sciences in general.
