Scientific Seminar: Preserving Natural History Collections in a Changing Climate

30 March 2026

Climate change is rapidly altering weather patterns worldwide and will significantly impact agriculture, energy costs, national economies, and social systems. To extend the useful life of scientific collections during these changes, the principles and practices of preventive conservation must be applied to collection management (including passive collection storage, storage arrays that make better use of space, storage furniture designed efficient monitoring, and the use of inert materials). Even though the costs of managing collections will increase, we must continue collecting specimens to document the effects of climate change. To prepare for the future, more diverse preservation technology and training programs for collection care workers is needed. Although these challenges may seem overwhelming, with planning we can continue to protect our invaluable collections in an uncertain future.

Within the program of Seminars on Biodiversity, SEMBIO. Debate and exchange of experiences essentially on systematics, zoology, animal evolution and molecular phylogeny. These talks are organized by the ZooSysEvo Consolidated Research Group made up of scientists from the Faculty of Biology (UB), Zoology Unit (UAB) and the Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona. The aim is to spread the contents of the research of the group’s researchers or of an invited researcher.
