The Hivernacle (Greenhouse) in the Parc de la Ciutadella has now been part of the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona (Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona) since January 2025. Alongside the Castell dels Tres Dragons (Castle of the Three Dragons) and the Centre d’Exposicions (Martorell Exhibitions Centre), it forms part of the heritage and science axis of the Ciutadella del Coneixement (Ciutadella Knowledge Hub), a leading node of knowledge, dissemination, research and innovation in Europe.
The Greenhouse is a unique construction of exceptional heritage and natural value that comprises three sections: the Central Area, for the promotion of the Ciutadella as a science park; the Magnolias Area, housing a permanent collection of living plants, and the Picasso Area, for temporary exhibitions on natural sciences linked to the neighbouring Centre Martorell exposicions (Martorell Exhibitions Centre).
Designed by Josep Amargós i Samaranch, the Greenhouse was one of the buildings constructed for the Universal Exhibition of 1888, and is currently protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest.
Now open to the public after a long period of closure, the renovated Greenhouse operates as a space for the curation and exhibition of botanical collections, and an excellent venue for a wide range of informative events and activities focused on bringing nature and botanical knowledge closer to people, while celebrating the heritage value of the Parc de la Ciutadella.
