Despite the specific epithet peruviana, this is a species native to the Mediterranean, not to Peru. This error is due to the fact that the bulbs were brought to England from Spain on board a ship named The Peru.
Scilla peruviana, also called peruvian lily, is a herbaceous plant that is characterised by the fact that it is larger than most other Scilla species and by its flowering stems, which bear a dense pyramidal raceme of 40 to 100 flowers of an attractive lilac-blue colour. Due to this showy beauty, the species is often cultivated as an ornamental plant.
