The exhibit introduced the different groups of ‘builders’, living beings that build structures. The exhibit looked at forms and designs that these animals make and the building techniques and materials they use. The role of natural selection, which provides the direction in which the buildings will evolve, was also explained. The exhibit explained the origins, evolution, and diversity of structures that have been made by ‘building’ animals since the first signs of building activity in the Cambrian (around 550 million years ago) to the present. The exhibit was divided into 5 areas: ‘Evolution of structures’, ‘Why do they build?’, ‘How do they build?’, ‘Changing the environment’, and ‘From builder to architect’.
