Visitan's ExhibitionsExposicions temporalsPrevious Atapuerca

This exhibit highlighted the importance of the findings from the Atapuerca (Burgos) localities. Human evolution is explored through the fossils that were found. Man’s evolution is depicted as a tree with multiple branches and Homo antecessor (the first European, 800,000 years old) was the common ancestor. Numerous fossil reconstructions and reproductions were included, such as the head of Homo antecessor found at the Gran Dolina locality or the Cranium 5 head and the Elvis pelvis found at the Sima de los Huesos locality.

In Barcelona, the exhibit was made complete by the reconstruction of a new finding: the only complete 300,000 year-old femur, which is included in the world paleontology register and was discovered in the month of July 2001. This fossil established, for the first time, the complexion and size of the pre-Neanderthals.
