Petrology

The Petrology Science Department was established as such in 1917 with the ingress of the curator Maximino San Miguel de la Cámara, who began the collection and continued to increase it until 1942. During his time there approximately 11,000 items were entered in the register and the Museum received its most important historical collections: the Antiga, Rosals, Large Blocks, Moragas, Geological Map, Almera, Vidal, Royal Academy and Serradell collections.

Alfredo San Miguel Arribas curated the collection from 1955 until 1966, when he was appointed director of the former Geology Museum. Since then and up until 2005, Alícia Masriera took charge of the petrology collections, a job which she combined with that of running the Geology Museum until her retirement (1985-2005). During that time the department concentrated on research and the accessioning of collections was practically associated with that activity, registering 3,000 new specimens.

The department focuses on updating the early collections, acquiring new collections that complement the existing ones, and new projects of conservation and research.
